Christopher gripped the leather steering wheel of his black Audi A6. The rain poured down as he drove home after another long day at the office.

Dinner would be waiting for him in the fridge. He’d have to warm it up without waking up the kids. They’d already be tucked in bed; another night with daddy stuck at work instead of at home with the family.

It felt like he was missing the most important years of their lives, and for what? Success? Status? His name, mentioned in the occasional Forbes article?

Was any of that worth what he was giving up in return?

The thought crossed his mind. The same thought he’d had a dozen times on late night drives home, just like this one…

“If I just hit the gas and jerked the wheel, and wrapped this car around the closest tree, would it even matter?”

From the outside, his life looked perfect. He’d married his high school sweetheart. They had two beautiful children. He drove a nice car and they lived in a big house. He ran one of the most successful businesses in town. 

Christopher had it all. 

But he wasn’t happy.

“What the hell is wrong with me,” he asked himself, snapping back to reality.

Up Against the Wrong Wall

Maybe you’ve heard the old saying, “I climbed to the top of the latter, only to realize it was up against the wrong wall.” Well, that’s how Christopher felt at that very moment.

His stress levels were through the roof.

He worked 50+ hours a week and felt like he’d stopped making any progress. His health was starting to slip, as he had trouble finding time to make it to the gym on a regular basis. On top of that, things weren’t as great at home as he made them out to be.

The family photo on his desk, filled with happiness and smiles, was a mask for growing tensions between his wife and him. Their sex life was suffering after having the two kids. Little things would get under his skin and set him off for no explainable reason.

It felt like he’d hit an invisible boundary in life.

No matter how much he struggled, nothing got any easier. In fact, things just seemed to be getting harder.

Back when he was a kid, people told Christopher about how much potential he had. And up until a few years ago, most things came pretty easy to him. He passed all his classes without studying. Girls found his confidence irresistible. People had faith in him and lined up behind his every idea.

So what changed?

The Problem with Groot

A few years back, Marvel Comics had a smash hit movie called Guardians of the Galaxy. You probably saw it. It’s Christopher’s favorite in the series. One of the best-loved characters from that franchise is a tiny little potted plant named Baby Groot.

Groot is alive; with eyes and ears and a mouth. He can move and dance and interact with the rest of the crew. Audiences fell in love when they saw the little plant dancing on the big screen. Groot reminded Christopher of a small houseplant he’d had as a kid.

His houseplant was a kind of tree, like a Bonsai. His dad got it for him as a gift one year. Like Baby Groot, it was in a small ceramic pot, which Christopher watered every day and let sit out on his window seal.

After a while, Christopher’s small tree stopped growing.

He watered it, the same as always. He gave it plenty of sunlight and only the best soil. But no matter what, his little tree would no longer grow.

In the movie, Groot wasn’t always a baby. In fact, he could grow to 20 or 30 feet tall. But while he was in the pot, he stayed a baby; cute, adorable, and highly merchandisable.

One day, Christopher’s mom took a look at the little tree and knew right away what the problem was. She told him, “This little guy is Pot-Bound.”

Pot-Bound, Christopher soon discovered, is what happens when a tree’s roots are restricted by the size of its pot. If the roots can’t grow, the rest of the plant stays stunted as well, no matter how much water or sunlight it receives.

He and his mom took the little tree, removed it from the pot, and planted it in the backyard, next to the fish pond. At once, the little tree started growing again. Within the year, it had grown from less than a foot tall to its full height; just above three feet.

Once the roots could stretch out, so could the branches. Only then could the little tree grow to its true potential.

As Above, So Below

Remembering that tree, Christopher now feels like he’s in the same position.

No matter how much water he gives his business, it doesn’t grow. No matter how much sunlight he gives to his home life, things just get darker. He feels restricted – confined on the inside – and it’s preventing him from seeing the growth he wants on the outside.

In a lot of ways, Christopher is feeling like his own worst enemy. He’s made investments in his business that no longer show returns. He feels like he’s lost “the magic touch”. His team is starting to lose faith in him as a leader. 

Even worse are his fears for his home life. 

He’s tried everything he can think of to improve his marriage, but he still sees disaster on the horizon. If it comes to divorce, he could lose half of everything he owns. He could lose custody of his kids. 

If not a divorse, then a long, drawn-out continuation of what he has now… A stagnant relationship and the guilt of being an absentee father. 

Christopher feels like that plant from his childhood; struggling for growth, not able to use the water and sunlight he has. His roots are pot-bound, and until he does some inner-work, he knows he’ll never see the outer results he’s looking for.

Struggling to break free.

Christopher is like a lot of the guys I work with. He was pouring money into his business while avoiding the investments he needed to make in himself. He was going about things in the most difficult way possible, without even knowing it. 

He’s come a long way since then. But before I tell you about that… Did you know that your brain is the world’s most powerful supercomputer?

Have You Been Programmed for Failure?

First; the good news.

Between your ears is the most powerful computer the world has ever known. It can process information at amazing speeds, come up with solutions to complex problems, and keep every part of your body functioning, all at the same time.

Information and problem-solving are the keys to success, and you’ve got the best tool for the job, right inside your own head.

Now; the bad news.

Running that bad boy uses a lot of energy.

If you had to be ever-present – aware of everything happening around you, all the time – you’d be constantly exhausted. If you had to make a decision for every choice that came your way, you’d never have time to relax.

To make life bearable, most of what your brain does, it manages to do on programs running in the background.

Pumping your blood, turning food into energy, breathing, walking, watching out for danger; your brain does all these things for you, without you having to ask. These are all done on unconscious loops… background programs, if you will.

But these aren’t the only things your brain puts on loops in the background. In fact, most of the small decisions you make throughout the day are also set on auto-pilot and run on programs you might not even realize you have.

Stop living life on auto-pilot.

When your wife or girlfriend accuses you of something you didn’t do, how do you react?

When someone cuts you off in traffic, how do you react?

When you get good news. When you get bad news. When someone leaves you in suspense… How do you react?

When someone on your team fails to meet expectations, how do you respond?

A lot of times, we respond to these things with pre-written programs. We react without even thinking. And afterward, when we look back at how we reacted, sometimes we kick ourselves in the ass for repeatedly doing the wrong thing in these situations.

It’s easy to fall into patterns with things, especially after the third or fourth time we’ve dealt with them. These are our programs. Most of them are so ingrained that we don’t even realize we have them. 

The first time we encounter a situation, we try to figure out how to deal with it. But after a while, a situation pops up and we tell ourselves, “Oh, I remember this. Time to do that.” And we act out our programming.

“Oh, she’s got that look again. I know where this is going.”

“Oh, he’s late to work again. I know what’s coming next.”

These are the stories we tell ourselves, that trigger our programming, that dictate our responses.

Some of these programs are written for us; by our parents, our teachers, the media, our politicians, and our bosses. They tell us how we’re supposed to act in a given situation, and we accept their opinions as facts, making them part of our own programming.

Most of our programs, we write for ourselves, through the first couple of times we have to deal with something. Then, after we think we’ve got it figured out, we set it on auto-pilot, never to be re-examined again.

The problem is, a lot of the programs we write for ourselves, were written before we had much understanding of ourselves, of others, and of the world around us. Most of our pre-conditioned responses, we formed when we were young adults, teenagers, or even children. It’s what worked for us then, so we wrote the program, and we still use it now, late into our adult life.

Now we run a business, but our programs from back in grade school still run us. We set a goal to accomplish, but our programming works against us. We want to live a certain type of lifestyle, but it’s not consistent with the identity we’ve built for ourselves, so we never attain it. 

All these little scripts that no longer serve us, but still run as pre-programmed responses. It may have been decades since a program was written, never receiving a software update as we got older. We keep running on them, wondering why we can’t break free of our current situation.

This is where Christopher found himself, running the same old programs, desperately wanting a different result.

How to Break Free of Your Bad Programming

These programs, if left unchecked, become the lens through which we see the world. They start to mold our belief systems without us even realizing it.

We search out evidence of their accuracy. We ignore evidence of their errors. They become part of who we tell ourselves we are. They become our identity. They become the pot in which our roots find themselves restricted.

We want to grow. We want to live a more fulfilling life. But we’re stuck in our pots. We’re stuck in our programs.

A lot of guys try to fix this by going to a weekend retreat with some motivational speaker. They get all pumped up with positive affirmations and leave feeling like their world is about to change for the better.

Three weeks later, they’re back to their old ways, running on their old programs, struggling to get through the day.

Why?

For Christopher, it was about his identity. He wanted a higher level of success in life, but he was the guy who struggled at where he was. He wanted to have a passionate love life, but he was the guy with two kids and a sexless marriage.

He wanted to reach True North in his life, but he was the guy who got distracted and ended up walking east, west, and even south, most of the time.

His identity was the guy who succeeded; but not without a lot of struggle, and never to the extent that he truly desired.

He wanted to be the guy who had it all and was happy. But he saw himself as the guy who worked hard to get it all… and was miserable because of it.

What he wanted, and what he believed about himself, were not in alignment. 

For Christopher, it was as easy as asking what kind of guy he wanted to be, and what kind of programs would that guy be operating on? Then, he went about rewriting his own programs to align with that.

Once he saw himself as the guy who had all the things he wanted, he started consciously following programs that led him there.

Now, he’s living in alignment with where he wants to be, and his life has never been better.

Here's Where Almost Every Guy Gets it WRONG

A lot of men tell themselves the same lie… “Once I get this, then I’ll do/be that.

“Once I’m successful, then I’ll find more time to take care of my health.”

“Once my wife appreciates me, then I’ll be happy in this relationship.”

“Once I’m rich, I’ll donate to that cause I say I care so much about.”

The truth is, they’re going about things all backward.

When you take care of your health, you’ll have more energy and brainpower, making it easier to find success at work.

When you’re happier in your relationship, your wife will appreciate you more.

When you start giving to that cause today, you open yourself up to making more money because you know part of that increased wealth will make its way to a worthy cause.

You get to choose your identity.

Once you start acting and living in alignment with the identity you’ve chosen, that identity will start to manifest in the world around you. Once you start behaving like the man you want to be, you’ll become the man you want to be. But most guys keep running on the same scripts they always have, expecting that they’ll somehow get different results than what they’ve always been getting.

Here’s the hard truth; A weekend retreat isn’t going to help you in the long run. Positive affirmations and wishful thinking aren’t going to be what sets your roots free. It’s gonna take some work on rewriting your programs, and re-imagining your identity. But it can be done, and you can do it. 

Christopher is like most of my clients. Working on how he saw himself, and how he wanted to see himself, made a big difference in his life. Making sure his programming matched his desired outcomes started him on his path becoming the man always wanted to be. Now he’s living it. 

By breaking the pot – the unconscious programming – they’re able to live into their desired identity. And that’s only one part of why my approach outperforms all the other coaches and gurus out there.

How to Get 100% Battery Life

Imagine your life was split up into three areas; your business, your personal life, and your relationships. Now, imagine all three areas ran off of the same battery.

Most coaches – and their programs – only focus on one or two of these areas at once.

It’s like seeing a counselor for your marriage. Even if things start going great at home, life at the office is still a nightmare. Pretty soon, stress from the office is going to make its way back into the bedroom.

After all, you’ve only got one battery. Even if one or two areas are running as proficient as possible, if one area is still draining, it can suck the life out of the others.

My approach focuses on the whole picture, to help you be a more complete man. When we tackle all three areas at once, each one helps boost the power of the others, instead of draining them.

When you’re happy with your sex life, your confidence goes up at work. When work isn’t stressing you out, you have time to do the things you love, the things that recharge you. When you go home feeling optimistic, energized, it turns your wife on like a light switch.

Each area feeds the next. But it can only have that effect when you’re approaching things from the Complete Man point of view.
